Pre-Instrumental

The pre-instrumental course is designed to promote the basic musical skills for young children between the ages of 3 to 5 years.  This course is designed in a very structured, enjoyable and stimulating way and delivered in a way that is appropriate to this age group.

Class Times

This is a group class for 45 minutes once a week.
This programme is based on the Kodaly concept of music education is the practice and belief in musicianship development through singing. The voice is the primary instrument used in Kodaly training. Singing has a profound effect upon the child’s physical, social, emotional and intellectual development and is the most direct way of making a musical response. Not only is this instrument free and portable, but because it is part of our bodies anything that is learned through singing is learned

We provide drum lessons from six years to all levels. The lessons take place at The Music Room and last between 30 minutes and one hour depending on the student’s needs and stage of learning. You can cover any style of drums from Rock/Pop, Samba, Jazz, Big Band, Blues, Metal and much more.

Drumming is a complex skill, and drum lessons typically cover a range of elements including:

  • Grooves
  • Techniques
  • Rudiments
  • Independence and co-ordination
  • Musicianship
  • Time keeping
  • Drum notation

Sight reading and performance are also covered in the classes.  Students taking drum lessons have the option of taking exams which we encourage as this helps focus progress and achieve goals.

We provide piano lessons from all levels from elementary to advanced. The lessons take place at The Music Room and last from 30 minutes and one hour depending on the student’s needs and stage of learning.

Piano lessons are provided on a one to one basis. All students are encouraged to take exams which are set by The Royal Irish Academy of Music.  Please note that there is examination fee payable to RIAM upon each application. Exam fees will vary depending on the grade being entered for.

During your piano lesson we focus on finger exercises, technical ability and execution, sight-reading, ear tests and chosen repertoire.  The repertoire used in the class will be determined by the student’s needs for example, are they studying for an exam or are they learning for fun?

Musicianship theory is optional but it is advised that students strongly consider participation in this during the lesson as it will complement the instrument being learned. Written examinations and certification is available.

Beginners Group Lessons- Keyboard

As a progression from our Early Years Pre-Instrumental Programme, we offer a small group tuition in keyboard. Students will continue their musical journey in the comfort and security of their group setting having just completed our Early Years Pre-Instrumental Programme.  After one year, students will be able to diverge and progress to one to one tuition on the piano.

We provide guitar lessons from six years to all levels from beginner to intermediate through to advanced. The lessons take place at The Music Room and last between 30 minutes and one hour depending on the student’s needs and stage of learning.

Guitar lessons are provided on a one to one basis which allows for development at the student’s own pace. Small group lessons are available and can be arranged if the students are at a similar level of ability within the same style. Guitar students have the option of taking exams which we encourage as this helps focus progress and achieve goals.

There are two techniques of playing guitar taught at The Music Room- fingerstyle and plectrum style through a varied range of genres including modern, pop, classic, rock etc.

Piano

The voice is an instrument and here we offer voice training/singing lessons to help your voice reach its unique potential.  The lessons take place at The Music Room and last from 30 minutes and one hour depending on the student’s needs and stage of learning.

Lessons are one to one, during which the tutor will work on technique with warm up exercise, breathing techniques, pith and vocal exercises which will broaden the students range and strengthen the vocal chords.

There are two singing syllabuses with The Royal Irish Academy of Music. One is focused on classical material while the Theatrical syllabus concentrates on material from the musicals.  Singing exams are encouraged as they offer a focus and help to achieve goals.  Please note that there is examination fee payable to RIAM upon each application. Exam fees will vary depending on the grade being entered for.

Youth Choral Group/Choir

Choir is a fun and educational music class for children aged between 7 years plus. The benefits of singing in a choir are numerous and this class is free for students already enrolled in tuition at The Music Room otherwise fees apply.  This weekly class offers:

  • Developing aural skills, pitch and intonation
  • Learn vocal and breath control techniques
  • Making ensemble music and being part of a choral team
  • Social interaction within the group, confidence building in ensemble performance
  • Learning age-appropriate repertoire
  • Prepare for public performances and group examinations/competitions
